Student Achievement on the Grade 5, 8, and 10 Science CSTs, 2007–2010

February 2011

California students take cumulative Science CSTs in grade 5 and grade 8. Students also take a Life Science CST in grade 10, which is distinct from the end-of-course science CSTs that high school students might also take. This arrangement meets the federal requirement under the No Child Left Behind Act that states administer science tests in grade spans 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12.

For all three tests, the percentage of California students scoring proficient or advanced has increased during the past several years. However, the percentage scoring proficient or advanced on the Grade 10 Life Science CST remains below 50%.
