In each description, we provide you with background on how the program got started, its goals and activities, management structure, coordination with schools, staffing information, number of schoolsites and students served, funding, and program evaluation findings.
In addition, each profile features highlights from interviews conducted by EdSource staff with program directors. These highlights provide special insights into the challenges and accomplishments of each individual program.
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco: Treasure Island Club
The Treasure Island after-school program works closely with school staff and offers unique opportunities such as a sailing club. Some of the children served by the club used to be homeless. READ MORE

LA' s BEST After-School Program, the granddaddy of on-site after-school programs in California, serves 17,500 young people in 101 elementary schools. Its management infrastructure is similar to the private sector. READ MORE

Modesto After-School Program
The after-school program in Modesto draws kids by appealing to their interests, such as hip-hop dance.
