Final federal school lunch guidelines announced
School cafeterias should be serving healthier meals next fall because of the revamping of nutrition guidelines for the federally-subsidized school breakfast and lunch program. The new guidelines, which were announced on January 25, will go into effect in the 2012-13 school year, and came at the end of years of controversy and public input. The first such revision in 15 years, the new rules are intended to reduce fat and salt and increase fresh fruits and vegetables. Healthy food advocates generally applauded the new rules, though they were unhappy when Congress blocked their efforts to eliminate french fries and agreed to continue to allow schools to count pizza as a vegetable. Report: Many students reject healthier lunches at LAUSD
A radical revision of the school lunch menu in the Los Angeles Unified School District, including getting rid of old favorites like pizza and hamburger, has prompted thousands of students to opt out of eating school lunches, and to search for other ways to find unhealthy food offerings, according to a Los Angeles Times report. As Teresa Watanabe described it in this Los Angeles Times article: Participation in the school lunch program has dropped by thousands of students. Principals report massive waste, with unopened milk cartons and uneaten entrees being thrown away.
