Federal Laws and Policies

Although the state has ultimate responsibility for educating its students, the federal government also plays a major role in shaping education policy.

Federal laws and policies are generally aimed at supporting students who are disadvantaged in some way, such as low-income students, English learners, and students with disabilities. This section talks about those laws and their impact on California education policy. It also provides basic information about the extra funding and new programs created in 2009 by the federal stimulus, also known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
