Freelance Education Writers

EdSource is seeking freelance education writers for a new "EdSource Extra" online service focusing on K-12 and higher education.

The successful applicant will write items for EdSource Extra focusing on the crisis in public education in California, and potentially also contribute to in-depth projects and reports. Posts and reports will be distributed widely throughout the state. This is an opportunity to be part of a small but dynamic team of researchers and reporters developing new strategies for engaging Californians in the range of crises facing public education at all levels in the state and nationally.

EdSource is a highly regarded organization founded in 1977 that provides impartial reports on California education for policymakers, media organizations, and the California public. It is headed by Louis Freedberg, a veteran journalist who has worked at the San Francisco Chronicle, Pacific News Service, and other organizations, and is a co-founder of California Watch.

We are seeking candidates who have:

  • Experience in writing for online outlets
  • An ability to write quickly in an engaging and accessible style
  • A knowledge of and interest in education policy issues, especially in California
  • Data analysis and/or multimedia skills would also be a major plus.

The successful applicant will be a self-starter, generate ideas, and closely follow education trends and news developments in Sacramento and elsewhere. Some travel may be required.

EdSource's main office is in Mountain View, but depending on place of residence, selected applicants will be able to work independently by staying in close online and telephone contact with senior EdSource staff.

Please submit a short cover letter, a resume, and five examples of your writing to Communications Manager Smita Patel at edsource@edsource.org. Applications will be considered as they are received.
