How California Ranks: A National Perspective
November 2005
Is California holding its own in K-12 education compared with other states? This eight-page annual rankings report includes numerous charts and graphs that detail the state’s standing nationally in terms of education challenges, capacity, school staffing, and effort to support K-12 education. At a glance, California ranks:
- 1st in percentage of English learners
- 3rd in teacher salary levels
- 10th in proportion of low-income students
- 29th in per pupil spending
- 49th in teacher staffing ratios, and
- 44th or below in reading and math achievement on national assessments.
The report points out that determining the optimum level of resources for schools is a daunting task, involving questions of how efficiently schools use their funds. Given the state’s cost of living and level of student needs, however, it appears that investment is insufficient.
