STAR 2000: Rising Scores and Some Widening Gaps

This November 2000 report describes the encouraging successes and discouraging disappointments in the latest round of California students' test scores. The results on the national Stanford-9 test and the additional questions keyed to California's academic content standards are broken down by English language ability, family income, and ethnic groups.
The report notes that scores of all students are improving, on the average. The strongest growth was in grades 2 to 4, while high school math scores were troublesome. Large gaps remain for English learners, Hispanics, and African Americans. Students who are identified as economically disadvantaged had the least gains over the past three years.
The report also includes some cautionary notes about testing from the Office of the Legislative Analyst.
