Big Visions and Hard Realities: What We Can Do Now
Friday, April 18, 2008
Northern California
Video from the Forum will be posted online soon.
2008: Last spring Governor Schwarzenegger declared it would be California's "year of education."
But, in December, the governor declared the state to be in a fiscal emergency, setting in motion plans to make serious cuts to state-funded programs. 2008 is not likely to be the kind of "year of education" we’d all hoped for.
As discouraging as the budget news is, policymakers can still take steps to improve California's K-12 system. The challenge is to identify actions that are possible in 2008, while beginning to develop more comprehensive policy reforms that may take several years to refine and phase in.
Calls for new policy reforms to support K-12 improvement grew in 2007 when researchers released more than 20 education studies in March and a wide range of advocates submitted nearly 50 different policy briefs to state policymakers in October.
This EdSource Forum continues the momentum for change. We have pulled together top experts from California and around the nation to focus on three of the most pressing issues facing the state: the need to complete a comprehensive education data system, the imperative for bold strategies to turn around schools in Program Improvement, and the call for a more effective school finance system.
Providing a reality check, the state's Legislative Analyst will share updated state and education budget projections and a look at Governor Schwarzenegger's plans for 2008–09.
So, join us for EdSource’s 31st Annual Forum, held as a single, statewide event in Palo Alto this year. On behalf of the state's 6 million students, let’s continue the focus on important ideas for state education policy reform.
