Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will open today with a greater police presence in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT last month. The district already has its own police department with about 200 police officers, but officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, along with at least a dozen other law enforcement agencies, now plan to stop by all school based-preschools, elementary and middle schools at least once a day – and any other schools that request it, including private schools.
