Adult ed, regional occupational center advocates satisfied with budget deal – for now
Advocates for adult education and regional occupational centers, which provide hands-on learning in specific careers, say they are satisfied that the language in the budget bills expected to be voted on Friday is strong enough to protect their programs for another two years. The legislators and governor did not mince words, they say, in requiring districts that currently have programs to fund them for two more years. Dawn Koepke, a lobbyist for the state’s two adult … Read entire article »

Nine districts submit waiver for relief from NCLB
A collaborative of nine California school districts is submitting today a first-of-its-kind waiver seeking relief from the harshest sanctions of the No Child Left Behind law. The proposal would commit the participating districts to a new accountability system, focusing on student achievement but deemphasizing standardized test scores. The existing requirements and penalties would remain in effect for all of the other districts in the state. If U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan consents, the districts in … Read entire article »

EdWatch 2013: Accountability, accreditation test community colleges
California community colleges did something counterintuitive last year, and that may put them in a strong position to rebound in 2013 with help from Proposition 30 and increased state revenues. Even as the 112-college system was getting hit with an $809 million budget cut in recent years, it was developing and slowly rolling out a comprehensive reform plan. Now, with Gov. The second state in the nation to allow charter schools, California has long been at the forefront of education reform. We must also lead the … Read entire article »

‘I would prefer to trust our teachers …’
January 27th, 2013 | 20 Comments
By Charles Taylor Kerchner / commentary ~ EdSource Today
California’s back! Gov. Jerry Brown did himself proud in Thursday’s State of the State address, and he did California proud, too. In the details of the speech, there are prospects for boldness, greatness and innovation, not the tire patching and gridlock we’ve experienced as government. Others will comment at great length on the wisdom of the San Joaquin delta tunnel project and whether high-speed rail is prescient or folly. And educational interests are putting the pencil … Read entire article »
