This story has been updated. Embattled City College of San Francisco has received the final report from the accreditation commission on its progress in making reforms to address a host of financial and management problems. However, the contents of the report won’t be made public until the regional accrediting board issues a final ruling on whether the college will keep its accreditation, said Bob Agrella, the special trustee appointed to keep the college on track to … Read entire article »

San Francisco City College fuels college accreditation controversy

While City College of San Francisco prepares to receive a team of evaluators who will decide if the college keeps its accreditation and stays open, the impact of what’s at stake has spread beyond the campus, bringing into sharper focus a push for higher standards at community colleges. “If CCSF goes down, then accrediting issues will become a very big national debate,” said Patrick McCallum, president of the College Brain Trust, a Sacramento-based consulting firm whose clients include some … Read entire article »

Community colleges mull over accreditation sanctions

California Community College Chancellor Brice Harris and his advisory panel, known as the Consultation Council, are expected this week to discuss membership and the charge of the newly reestablished Task Force on Accreditation. The Council asked Harris to reconvene the Task Force to examine why so many community colleges are facing sanctions from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). The ACCJC has placed sanctions on nearly 30 community colleges. Three of them, the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and San Francisco City College, are on “show cause,” the most severe sanction, which could lead to a loss of accreditation. Last week, Bob Agrella, the special trustee appointed to oversee San Francisco City College, told the Community College Board of Governors that CCSF will fall short … Read entire article »

EdWatch 2013: Accountability, accreditation test community colleges

EdWatch 2013: Accountability, accreditation test community colleges

California community colleges did something counterintuitive last year, and that may put them in a strong position to rebound in 2013 with help from Proposition 30 and increased state revenues. Even as the 112-college system was getting hit with an $809 million budget cut in recent years, it was developing and slowly rolling out a comprehensive reform plan. Now, with Gov. Brown proposing to increase community college funding by $196.7 million and some financial breathing room … Read entire article »

Academic senate influence challenged at community colleges

An Oakland-based policy and advocacy organization is alleging that the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges drew up unlawful regulation more than two decades ago giving excessive power to faculty, in violation of state law. The nonprofit organization California Competes this week filed a legal challenge against the regulation, which it claims has obstructed efforts to improve student success rates. The legal maneuver relies on a rarely used section of the state education code … Read entire article »

For-profit colleges ordered to be transparent

For-profit colleges will have to be more forthcoming about information they’ve considered proprietary up to now. Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation yesterday that requires for-profit colleges to inform prospective students about their accreditation status, salaries, student loan default rates, and whether graduates have found work in the fields they were trained for. … Read entire article »

Agency prescribes SF City College trustees tough medicine

Agency prescribes SF City College trustees tough medicine

San Francisco City College trustees appeared grateful, albeit somber, last night as they listened to a lengthy assessment of the college district’s finances and heard tough recommendations on how to stave off insolvency and keep from losing its accreditation. “Thank you for an extremely comprehensive and extremely depressing report,” said trustee Rodrigo Santos, just half-heartedly in jest. In a 150-page report, the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) warned that CCSF is in “a perilous financial position,” … Read entire article »

City College of San Francisco told to do less

California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott told a roomful of people at City College of San Francisco something they didn’t want to hear: They’ll have to prioritize, ration, and do less from now on. At a special meeting of the college’s Board of Trustees last night, called to discuss the school’s accreditation crisis, Scott offered help and advice. “We’re limited in what we can do, but anytime you want to consult us we will be available, … Read entire article »
