Governor tries to fix adult ed plan, but controversy remains

Backing away from his controversial plan to hand control of adult education over to community colleges, Gov. Jerry Brown is instead proposing that regional consortia, made up of community colleges and school districts, determine adult ed’s future. However, his new plan is also stirring controversy. In his budget revision unveiled Tuesday, Brown provides substantially more dedicated funding for adult education beginning in 2015-16, raising the amount allocated to $500 million instead of the $300 million in … Read entire article »

Santa Barbara City College ties for national award

Santa Barbara City College is sharing this year’s Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, along with the $800,000 prize, with Walla Walla Community College in Washington. “The campus is saturated with academic support, including a writing center staffed by trained professionals and prove to improve course completion, and peer tutors embedded in hundreds of class sections,” wrote the Aspen Institute in its profile of SBCC. College president Lori Gaskin received the award during a ceremony Tuesday at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The college was a finalist last year for the award, which recognizes innovative community colleges. The award is coordinated by the Aspen Institute, a nonpartisan educational and policy organization. Agency prescribes SF City College trustees tough medicine

San Francisco City College trustees appeared grateful, albeit somber, last night as they listened to a lengthy assessment of the college district’s finances and heard tough recommendations on how to stave off insolvency and keep from losing its accreditation. “Thank you for an extremely comprehensive and extremely depressing report,” said trustee Rodrigo Santos, just half-heartedly in jest. In a 150-page report, the Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) warned that CCSF is in “a perilous financial position,” … Read entire article »

Higher community college fee plan in Santa Monica would be a first in California

Depending on your perspective, Santa Monica College’s plan to charge students several times the normal fee to add sections to oversubscribed classes is either a brilliant idea to cope with its shrinking revenues, or a misguided strategy making it more difficult for low-income students to reach their academic goals. Given the depth of the community colleges’ financial woes, and the fact that there are 112 of them around the state, it is surprising that more of … Read entire article »
