Gun safety courses offered to elementary teachers in Galt

In a new twist to professional development in a post-Sandy Hook world, some teachers in the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District will not only be learning Common Core state standards and classroom management, but also how to handle a gun. “We have a small-town feel here, so we could all relate to what happened at Sandy Hook,” said Superintendent Karen Schauer of the Dec. 14 shooting of 20 elementary school students and six teachers and … Read entire article »

Legislators introduce a flurry of school safety bills

In the aftermath of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., legislators in Sacramento have introduced almost two dozen bills that involve campus security, including requiring doors that lock from the inside, increasing mental health services, and providing panic alarms that link directly to law enforcement agencies, according to an article in the San Diego Union-Tribune. Representatives in Washington, D.C., are also considering school safety legislation, but some of the initiatives are costly, such as hiring more counselors, psychologists and social workers. Some of the California bills involve adding more requirements to school safety plans, such as developing tactical responses to emergencies and creating warning protocols for staff. Another bill would restrict funding to schools that don’t have adequate safety plans. LAUSD to beef up security with unarmed campus aides

In response to the Newtown shootings, Los Angeles Unified plans to hire 1,087 campus aides, who will wear special vests and carry two-way radios, to bolster security at more than 400 elementary schools, according to a report in the Daily News. Critics of the plan, which will cost $4.2 million, call it “security on the cheap.” “Another two people on each campus can help us maintain a safe environment that can ease the minds of our employees, parents, and students,” LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia told the Daily News last Friday. But Scott Folsom, a Mount Washington Elementary School Parent Teacher Association member and state PTA board member, told the Daily News “what they’re doing is security on the cheap.” Currently LAUSD has 1,028 campus aides at middle schools and high schools. EdWatch 2013: School safety issues emerge

California legislators have responded to the Connecticut shooting of school children by proposing three new gun or ammunition control laws, but so far only one bill that specifically deals with school safety. State Senator Ted Lieu (D-Torrance)  is reintroducing Senate Bill 49, hoping it will get treated better this year. It would put some teeth into existing law that requires all schools to have safety plans. Under the proposed legislation, the state Superintendent of Public Instruction would hold back … Read entire article »

How safe is safe?

How safe is safe?

Much has been, and will be, written about the latest incident of senseless violence on a school campus. But there will never be a rational explanation for what has happened or anything written that can reasonably justify the taking of the lives of our children. Schools across this state and across this country take very seriously the responsibility for developing school safety plans that protect students and staff during times of crisis or disaster. Our school … Read entire article »

National response needed to protect children from gun violence

National response needed to protect children from gun violence

When will we ever learn? Almost a quarter century ago, California experienced the horror of an elementary school massacre when five children were killed at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton. In that traumatic January 1989 event, barely remembered except among those whose lives were directly touched by the tragedy, Patrick Purdy, a so-called “drifter” with a long criminal record and a history of mental disturbance, entered the school grounds during recess and shot to death five children … Read entire article »
